Psyllium husk is the seed coat of Plantago ovata. It is rich in soluble fibre that absorbs water and forms a gel, which makes it a valuable ingredient for fibre supplements, breakfast cereals and bars, and especially gluten-free baking, where it gives dough structure and elasticity.
Psyllium is graded by purity — the share of husk versus light and heavy extraneous matter — typically 85%, 95%, 98% and 99%. Higher purity means a higher swell volume and a cleaner appearance. It is supplied as whole husk or milled husk powder in mesh sizes from 40 to 100: finer powders hydrate faster and disperse more smoothly, coarser grades are easier to handle and suit capsules less.
Every lot ships with its certificate of analysis covering purity, swell volume, moisture, ash and microbiology. If you are making a product with therapeutic claims, it may be regulated by the TGA rather than as a food — confirm the pathway with your regulatory adviser.
They are the same material. Powder is husk milled to a defined mesh size; it hydrates faster and blends more smoothly into drinks and doughs.
Supplement and premium food applications usually specify 98% or 99%. Lower purities suit applications where appearance and maximum swell volume matter less.
Organic grades are available on request. Tell us the certification you need (for example ACO, USDA NOP or EU organic) and we will confirm supply and documents.
