Psyllium husk grades explained: purity, mesh size and swell volume

What 95%, 98% and 99% purity mean, how whole husk differs from powder, and which mesh size suits bakery, drinks and capsules.

Psyllium husk looks like a simple commodity, but the grade you buy changes how it performs. Three numbers matter: purity, mesh size and swell volume.

Purity

Purity is the percentage of clean husk in the material; the rest is light extraneous matter (fine particles and other plant parts) and heavy extraneous matter (seed fragments, grit). Common grades are 85%, 95%, 98% and 99%.

  • 99% and 98% — the standard for supplements, premium foods and capsules. Cleanest appearance and highest swell.
  • 95% — good value for bakery, cereals and fortification where a little extraneous matter is acceptable.
  • 85% — lower-cost material, often used in feed and less demanding applications.

Whole husk or powder?

Whole husk flakes are easy to handle, give visible texture, and hydrate more slowly. Husk powder is the same material milled to a defined mesh; it hydrates faster and disperses more evenly.

Mesh size

Mesh describes how fine the powder is — the higher the number, the finer the powder.

  • 40 mesh — coarse; bakery, cereals and bars where some texture is fine.
  • 60–80 mesh — general-purpose; doughs, drink mixes and blends.
  • 100 mesh — very fine; smooth drinks and accurate capsule filling.

Swell volume

Swell volume measures how much the husk expands in water, in millilitres per gram. It is the most direct indicator of functional performance and rises with purity. Specify a minimum swell volume in your specification and check it on the COA for each lot.

Other things to specify

  • Moisture and ash limits
  • Microbiological limits appropriate to your product (and whether you need a heat or steam-treated grade)
  • Conventional or organic, and which organic certification
  • Packaging (typically 25 kg bags) and pallet configuration

Handling in production

Psyllium hydrates fast. Mix it with the other dry ingredients before adding water, or disperse it into well-agitated liquid, to avoid lumps. In gluten-free bread, let the dough rest briefly so the psyllium gel can develop before shaping.

Suvita supplies psyllium husk and powder across Australia with a COA for every lot. Tell us your grade and volume for a quote.

Quick answers

What does 99% purity psyllium mean?

At least 99% of the material is clean psyllium husk; at most 1% is extraneous matter.

Which mesh is best for capsules?

Fine powders around 80–100 mesh flow and fill most consistently.
